Hmmm…

So D and I are in the car, driving home from school, and he says, "Mom, we should move in with Grandma and Grandpa."

We joke about this all the time- my parents have the greatest house ever, and they're leaving town for an upcoming weekend, so we've ramped up the joking  to include moving their stuff out and our stuff in while they're gone.  So I assumed this was the line of thinking coming from Dillon, and said, "We joke about that, and it would be really great, wouldn't it?"

Dillon says, "Mom, we should move in with them so we can give our house to someone else."   I ask why we would want to do that, and he tells me, "Some people don't have homes.  And some even have to live in cardboard boxes.  So we should give our home to them!"

I try to explain to him that it isn't really that there aren't enough houses, that other things go into people not having places to live, and that it's really hard to understand and it is really sad.  But this is a toughie.

having enough affordable housing is probably a tough concept to explain to a little guy…

It is definitely tough to explain (becaue it’s so stupid, really, that we don’t have housing for everyone), but actually, what I took away from the the story is how great a little guy Dillon is that he’s thinking about giving up his home so someone else can have it. What a great kid!
